The 115 islands of the Seychelles fall under two distinct groups. Over 40 tall, granite, Inner Islands and just over 70 low-lying coralline cays, atolls and reef islands of the Outer Islands. This amazing nature’s paradise is lush, mountainous and offers not just white sand beaches but also many marine parks and nature reserves for active pursuits and ‘Kodiak moments’.
We’re exploring some of the highlights of the Seychelles, visited during Crystal Esprit’s Seychelles season.
Praslin is the Seychelles’ second largest island and the site of the fabulous Vallée de Mai, one of Seychelles’ two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Vallée is host to six species of palm to be found only in the Seychelles including the legendary Coco-de-Mer, the world’s heaviest nut that grows high on ancient palms in the primeval forest. The island features truly exquisite beaches such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette, both appearing on the top-10 list of world’s best beaches in recent years
A close neighbour to Praslin, La Digue is the fourth largest island in Seychelles with a friendly atmosphere, languid pace of life, traditional architecture and breath-taking beaches. La Digue’s biodiversity makes it a perfect home for the Seychelles’ black paradise flycatcher, one of the rarest birds on earth as well as other stars such as the Chinese bittern, cave swiftlet and waxbill. Its forests also contain a wealth of flora in the form of delicate orchids & tumbling vines of vanilla. Don’t miss a tour of a local plantation house, or a visit to the beautiful beach of Anse Source d’Argent.
Cousin has been a nature reserve since 1968, and every year 250,000 birds nest here, among them the Seychelles sunbird, red turtle dove and moor hen. The island is where certain species such as the Seychelles bush warbler have recovered from the edge of extinction. There is a population of geckoes on the island, giant tortoises introduced from Aldabra and Cousin is also a favourite nesting site for hawksbill turtles. The nature hikes on Cousin Island are second to none!
